A Linguistic Analysis of Errors in Undergraduate Students’ Translated Texts
Translation is one of the most important skills that a graduate from the English department of College of Languages-Salahaddin University has to acquire. It involves mastery of both the source and target languages. This study aims at analyzing Fourth year students’ translated texts from Kurdish into English. These students are presupposed to have acquired good mastery of English grammar and vocabulary. However, some students seem to have not acquired certain basic aspects of English patterns and grammatical structures.
The study attempts to investigate the various errors committed by fourth year students in order to identify the problematic areas in which they make errors and point out the factors that give rise to making such errors with the objective of reducing them to the minimum.
It has been noticed that difficulties arise due to the students’ lack of enough knowledge about English grammar and equivalent vocabulary as well as the cultural and idiomaticidiosyncrasies andthe influence of the mother tongue.
