A Statistical Study about the Higher Education in Kurdistan Region

Abstract

This article is a statistical study about the development of higher education in the Kurdistan Region. The study includes three types of comparisons, before and after the 1991 uprising until the establishment of the Ministry of Higher Education and scientific research in the Kurdistan Region as there was a Higher Committee of the Council of Ministers oversees the process of higher education, and the promotion of higher education in the Kurdistan Region since the establishment of the ministry in 2006. A number of results were obtained, including increasing the percentage of universities and teaching staff and increasing the percentage of graduates from universities in government and private institutes, in addition to a set of financial and statistical information about private universities, as well as increasing in the number of academic staff with different level of scientific titles. By comparing 2006 and 2017, especially the scientific title from teacher to assistant professor by the master degree holders, which show the highest rate (524%). Moreover, the number of public universities has been increased from 3 to 15 universities, while private universities have increased significantly from one private to 15 universities and 11 institutes. Furthermore, about 4,000 students were enrolled in the capacity building program to complete the postgraduate studies (MSc and PhD) in international universities.
